Innovation is an important aspect of any organization’s progress, and in order to spur innovative thinking, employees should be empowered to explore limitless possibilities. As a telecommunications company that strives towards #BeyondBetter growth, ATOM encourages employees to identify ways to improve existing products and offerings, as well as to introduce new innovations to enhance the way in which we operate.
In this article, I’d like to share how ATOM encouraged the behaviour of “Explore to Innovate” among employees through our Innobox internal campaign, during which we challenged them to learn, be daring and put on their curiosity hats.
The InnoBox Challenge
We launched InnoBox in June 2022, a challenge designed to encourage employees to share innovative and creative ideas for business growth and to improve our day-to-day operations. The challenge aimed to generate ideas in three areas: improving the People Experience, driving Transformation, and finding new ways for the organization to achieve Business Enhancement.
Employees were free to form groups and were given three months to submit their ideas, with the winning ideas chosen by a panel of judges comprised of members of the ATOM management team. To encourage participation, each team whose submission was chosen as a winning idea received a cash prize of MMK 5 million.
The InnoBox Journey
To support our employees with their entries to the InnoBox campaign, we held a "Pitch Perfect" workshop that featured knowledge-sharing sessions about how to generate ideas, from basic design thinking to prototype, as well as how to pitch an idea and eventually bring it to life.
The workshop presented opportunities for learning, but more importantly, it encouraged employees to be curious in identifying problems and to be bold and daring when developing their solutions, which could be based on process simplification, digitalization, automation, reducing operating costs, and new business development.
The Results
A total of 12 teams, comprising employees from different departments, submitted purpose-led and meaningful ideas for the InnoBox campaign. In mid-November 2022, we announced the two winning ideas as follows:
1) Team Lucky Charm proposed a programme named "ATOM Legend" to enable ATOM customers to earn cash rewards by participating in activities hosted in the ATOM Store app. This idea utilises the ATOM Store app platform for further engagement with customers.
2) Team Alpha proposed the development of a mobile application to manage network-related complaints. Using a mobile app platform based on the concept of a self-service portal, ATOM’s operation team would be able to receive immediate reports from users about network issues and resolve them promptly. This idea presents opportunities for ATOM to improve response times, service efficiency, and customer satisfaction.
In the coming weeks, both teams will receive support through workshops and one-on-one coaching, as well as funding, to implement their ideas. Together with the teams at ATOM, I look forward to seeing the positive impact that these ideas will have on our goal of bringing #BeyondBetter services to our customers.
