A transparent workplace, defined as one that has open communication between leadership and employees, offers benefits to an organization such as increased employee engagement and stronger company culture. In this article, I would like to highlight how the team at ATOM embraces transparency, which is one of the five behaviours that guides our corporate culture.
Openness in the Workplace
Openness in the workplace plays an important role in shaping positive experiences for employees. How do we nurture a culture of open communication at ATOM?
1) Regular management updates: We organise quarterly townhall meetings and monthly sharing sessions where management shares company performance and key milestones. This allows employees to be aware of the company’s progress and challenges, and the rationale behind decisions made by the management.
2) Feedback culture: It is important to build an environment where people feel safe to share honest and constructive feedback. At ATOM, this is encouraged at all levels of the company.
3) Open-door policy: At ATOM, we adopt an open office concept, which makes it easier for teams to interact and collaborate. Keeping our doors open, literally, encourages employees to come forward to share their suggestions and concerns regarding work or the workplace.
Honesty in the Workplace
Honesty strengthens the work environment and encourages employees to communicate freely, build good business ethics and do the right thing. Here are some ways we strive to create an atmosphere of honesty at ATOM.
1) Being authentic when recruiting talents: We place emphasis on being candid when conducting interviews. We have clear discussions with candidates about the job requirements and ensure that candidates’ expectations are aligned to what the company is looking for.
2) Being clear on ethical standards: We stress to employees our expectations related to honesty in various ways, such as the employee handbook. In addition, our whistleblower policy gives employees the freedom to report any unethical behaviour.
3) Working earnestly: At ATOM, we trust our employees to do their jobs without having to look over their shoulders. To support employee development, we conduct appraisals to discuss job performance and facilitate dialogue on ways the company can provide better support.
Sincerity in the Workplace
At ATOM, we believe in the importance of being sincere to each other and establishing fruitful relationships in the workplace. How do we encourage sincere connections to be formed?
1) Going above and beyond: We encourage everyone in ATOM to adopt a “How can I help?” mind-set. By providing an empathetic ear to colleagues - to listen to their challenges and provide help in any ways possible, team unity is strengthened every day.
2) Gratitude and recognition: At ATOM, we recognise the achievements of our teams and employees, and to express gratitude for their efforts on a regular basis. The aim is to create viral encouragement which uplifts everyone as we work towards achieving common goals.
3) Sincerity in everything that we do – Being sincere applies to the way we serve our customers, how we work with our partners and engage our stakeholders. Setting high expectations also drives sincerity, as it motivates our teams to be more hardworking.
As communication in the world evolves, people’s expectations of communication in the workplace evolves with it. Organizational transparency is therefore a constant work in progress, and something that is crucial towards our endeavour to operate a world-class telecommunications network for the people of Myanmar and to support #BeyondBetter growth for the country.
