It has been estimated that an average person will spend one third of their life at work. That makes who we’re working with and how we relate with co-workers extremely important.
At ATOM, we recognise the significance of nurturing a work environment with a positive and collaborative culture where everyone feels valued and empowered to be their true selves. We strive towards fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in every aspect of our operations.
Inspired by International Day of Families, I’d like to share five reasons why building a family-like workplace environment is crucial for building a great place to work:
1. Shared Goals: A family-like culture is built on shared values and a unified mission. When employees’ goals are aligned with the organisation’s vision, we can move forward together more effectively.
2. Stronger Bonds: At ATOM, we believe getting to know our co-workers on a personal level is crucial. That’s why we hold events such as ATOM Family Day and our annual Sports Day, where employees can get to know each other outside of their job roles, meet each other’s loved ones, and bond as a team. This encourages a sense of camaraderie and teamwork.
3. Enhanced Communication: Just as in any family, we embrace open communication at ATOM. We implemented open-door policy and feedback channels to encourage idea exchange and opinion sharing, enabling collaboration, effective problem-solving, and informed decision-making.
4. Sense of Belonging: All employees want to feel that they belong in the workplace. At ATOM, we embrace diversity and inclusion, caring for our employees through various programmes and benefits to improve their overall wellbeing, which creates a deep sense of belonging and connection.
5. Greater Job Satisfaction: Employees thrive in a supportive and nurturing environment. It can help with heightened morale, increased productivity, and ultimately, greater job satisfaction. Happy employees also result in happy customers.
While we value the familial bonds within our workplace, it is equally essential to maintain healthy boundaries and display professionalism in the way we work. We promote a culture of mutual respect and accountability, while avoiding unrealistic expectations of one another. In addition, employees should be allowed to celebrate their differences and not conform to a singular culture or set of beliefs, as is often expected within families.
On the occasion of International Day of Families, I want to express my deep gratitude for my work family at ATOM. Over the past three years, my colleagues have become my family away from home, and it is an honour to lead a team of like-minded individuals who support and uplift one another, both personally and professionally. This spirit of togetherness is truly what makes ATOM a special place to work, and fuels our collective drive to achieve great things.
