Sittwe, Rakhine State, Myanmar, 9 June 2023 – ATOM has today contributed donations of essential items as well as materials for constructing homes to communities affected by Cyclone Mocha in Rakhine State. The donations are part of ATOM’s Humanitarian Care & Rehabilitation Programme, and reflect the company’s continued commitment to the recovery and rebuilding efforts in the state after the devastating impact of the cyclone.
The contributions from ATOM will benefit a total of 250 households in Rakhine State – 120 households in Rathedaung Township, 70 households in Sittwe Township and 60 households in Ponnagyun Township. Each household will receive food items such as rice and lentils as well as 30 water purification tablets for clean drinking water. In addition, each household will receive 30 Aluzinc 0.42mm steel roofing sheets, a 24 x 24 feet tarpaulin sheet, iron nails and iron rope to construct new homes.
ATOM is collaborating with We Love Rakhine, a non-profit organization, to distribute the items to the households. The total value of the donated items is estimated at MMK 212,287,500, equivalent to MMK 849,150 per household. This includes the delivery and logistical costs associated with transporting the items.
"We are deeply committed to supporting the resilient communities of Rakhine State during their journey towards recovery. Our contributions extend beyond immediate relief, as we recognize the importance of providing the necessary resources for rebuilding homes and lives. By supporting the affected communities, we aim to restore hope and foster long-term resilience. ATOM would also like to express gratitude to the We Love Rakhine organization for their collaboration and support towards ATOM’s Humanitarian Care & Rehabilitation Programme,” said U Win Paing Kyaw, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of ATOM.
“Relief and recovery support are essential to those affected by natural disasters, and We Love Rakhine is delighted to be part of ATOM’s initiative of rebuilding homes and lives of the Cyclone Mocha affected communities. I believe that ATOM’s generous donation will have a major impact on those most in need,” said U Htun Htun Naing, President of We Love Rakhine.
ATOM will evaluate further ways to contribute to the response and rebuilding efforts in Rakhine State. During the days before and after Cyclone Mocha, ATOM extended support to its customers in Rakhine State with free data, voice calls and SMS to help them stay connected with their loved ones and seek assistance if needed.
In addition, ATOM’s network team worked swiftly to assess and repair damaged telecom towers and other communication infrastructure in impacted areas across the country following Cyclone Mocha to enable customers to access the network.
