Enhancing Cyber Security Awareness: Tips for Protecting Your Digital Assets

Joint Announcement

January 28, 2025

Through innovation and collaboration, the Telecommunications industry thrives to enhance connectivity and safeguard the digital ecosystem. As cyber threats continue to evolve, it is important for individuals and organizations to stay ahead of potential risks and protect their digital assets and personal data. Cybersecurity breaches can cause significant damage and impact on a personal and organizational level.

Telecommunications Operators in Myanmar have compiled the following cybersecurity tips to help users take proactive steps to secure one’s digital presence.

Cyber Security Awareness Tips:

  1. Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Whenever possible, enable MFA for an additional   layer of security. MFA can be receiving a one-time code on your phone or email, or scan your fingerprint, answer security questions which make it much harder for cybercriminals such as hackers to gain access to your accounts.

  2. Use Strong, Unique Passwords: Avoid using easily guessable passwords, such as “password123” or personal information like your name or birthdate. Create complex, unique passwords (incorporating symbols, numeric numbers and alphabets) and change them regularly.

  3. Be Cautious of Phishing Scams: Cybercriminals often trick individuals into providing sensitive personal information by posing as trustworthy sources through emails, text messages, or social media. Always verify the sender’s identity before clicking on any links or downloading attachments. When in doubt, contact the website or account holder/page directly.

  4. Keep Software Up to Date: Regularly update your digital devices operating systems, browsers, and applications. Patches and updates often include critical security fixes that protect against known vulnerabilities exploited by cybercriminals.

  5. Use of Public Wi-Fi: Avoid accessing sensitive accounts or conducting financial transactions over public Wi-Fi networks, as these networks are often insecure.

  6. Use of Antivirus and Anti-Malware Tools: Ensure the installation and maintenance of reliable antivirus and anti-malware software to safeguard against threats such as viruses, spyware, ransomware, and other malicious attacks. Regular updates are essential for maintaining optimal protection.

  7. Be Skeptical of Suspicious Communications: Always scrutinize messages that appear urgent or intimidating. Cybercriminals often employ scare tactics to pressure individuals into quick decisions. Take a moment to verify the authenticity of such communications before taking any action.

  8. Use of OTP: One-time password (OTP) was used to secure login. Do not share OTP with anyone for secure usage.

  9. Be careful with Application permissions: Only grant permissions necessary for the application to function (review permissions).

  10. Be cautious with Calls: Don’t pick up unknown incoming calls. Scammers often reach out by phone. If you receive many unknown incoming calls that end up being scammers or robocalls, you can use features available on your phone to block spam.

  11. Install Applications from Trusted Sources Only: Download software and applications exclusively from official stores or trusted sources. Unverified downloads can contain malware or viruses that compromise your devices and data.

The above tips are part of Telecommunications Operators in Myanmar ongoing efforts to promote cybersecurity awareness.
